Dear Dr. Jen, What can I do to improve my HDL “good” cholesterol?
Answer: Eat more foods rich in HDL cholesterol, such as certain nuts, fish, and seeds. I’ve included a picture here, detailing more foods that help increase HDL cholesterol.
Also, exercising regularly and losing weight can help improve your HDL level.
Omega-3 supplements also help. If you decide to take an omega-3 supplement, pick a brand that tests for mercury content!
The label will state whether it has been tested for mercury. You do not want to take a fish oil supplement that will inadvertently increase your mercury consumption.
Also, aim for 1,000 milligrams of omega-3. Often times, when you pick up a supplement over the counter, it will be labeled as something generic, like fish oil 1000 mg. However, please read the label. Sometimes the thousand milligrams of fish oil does not mean 1000 mg of omega-3, but a variety of different types of fish oil. You want your supplement to contain 1000 mg of omega-3, for starters. There are many places you can get a good quality omega-3. Here’s one site you can check out: https://wellevate.me/jennifer-ju#/
Improving your HDL cholesterol is good for your heart health. Good luck in improving your HDL cholesterol!
